Drunk Driver Sideswipes Police Cruiser, Tries To Flee On Sunrise Highway: Scpd

A Long Island man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after crashing into a police vehicle and attempting to flee on Sunrise Highway, Suffolk County police announced.

Cristian Sanchez, 25, of Coram, was driving a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe eastbound near Exit 57 in Yaphank when he sideswiped a marked highway patrol vehicle from the left lane at 11:58 p.m. on Friday, March 7, police said.

Instead of stopping, Sanchez continued eastbound until he was pulled over by officers with the Street Takeover Task Force and taken into custody, authorities said.

He was charged with:

  • Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident with No Injuries.

Sanchez was held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, March 8, officials said.
